Electrical Power Systems

History

Departament of Electrical Power Systems (DEPS) was established under the name of the Chair of Power Plants and Electrical Networks, at the same time of the establisment of the Faculty of Energy Engineering in 1950. In 1963 it was splitted in two chairs. One of them, the Chair of Electrical Networks, leaded by Professor Martin Bercovici, became the present DEPS.

DEPS consists of research teams that cover, from an educational and research point of view, the following fields: Electrical networks, Power systems, High voltage technology, Use and quality of electricity, Optimizations and Energy market, Smart grids, Applications of Artificial Intelligence techniques in power systems.

Responsibilities

DEPS is responsible for organizing the following study programs within the Faculty of Energy Engineering:

  • Electrical Power Systems Engineering, bachelor's degree;
  • Energy and Information Technologies, bachelor's degree;
  • Monitoring and Control of Electrical Power Systems, master's degree;
  • Applied Informatics in Energy, master's degree;
  • Energy Systems Management, master's degree.

Activity

DEPS supports through its specialists the development of teaching activities in the other bachelor's and master's programs of the Faculty of Energy Engineering. It is also involved in the study programs at other faculties within UPB: Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Entrepreneurship, Engineering and Business Management; Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages.

From the point of view of scientific activity, DEPS has been permanently connected with traditional partners in the National Energy System (Transelectrica, DEN, Electrica, Enel, EON, Hidroelectrica) to solve the complex technical and research problems inherent in such a complex system. DEPS constantly participates in the realization of high-level European research projects, funded over time by the European Commission through the FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020 programs.
